Attention to Farmers: Spike in Leptospirosis (Notifiable illness) [1 July 2016]
Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease that can cause flu-like symptoms, such as headaches, muscle pains, and fevers - in severe cases, it causes bleeding from the lungs, meningitis or kidney failure.
How can you get it?
breaks in the skin or
through mucous membranes of the eyes, nose or mouth;
pets i.e. dogs may carry leptospirosis or spread the infection to humans;
contaminated rivers and lakes;
farming systems, flood water, and water-logged paddocks and waterways
animal manure when gardening (urine-contaminated manure).
